Choosing the Right Climbing Rope

Your climbing rope is the single most important piece of gear between you and the ground. Every rope in our collection is UIAA certified and built by manufacturers who make rope for a living. We carry dynamic ropes for lead climbing, static lines for rappelling and fixed lines, and accessory cord for anchors, prusiks, and general utility.

ROPE.com sells climbing rope by the foot and in standard lengths so you get exactly what you need for your project, crag, or gym.

Dynamic vs Static Rope

Dynamic ropes stretch under load. That stretch absorbs the energy of a fall and reduces the force on the climber, anchors, and gear. Every lead climbing and top-rope scenario requires a dynamic rope. The nylon kernmantle construction gives you a strong core with a durable woven sheath that resists abrasion against rock.

Static ropes have minimal stretch. They are built for rappelling, hauling, fixed lines, and rope access where you do not want elongation under load. Do not lead climb on a static rope.

Diameter and Weight

Climbing ropes range from about 8.5mm to 11mm in diameter. Thicker ropes (10mm+) are more durable and easier to grip. Thinner ropes (sub-9.5mm) are lighter for long approaches and alpine routes but wear faster. For gym climbing and top-roping, 9.5mm to 10.5mm is the standard range. For sport and trad, 9mm to 9.8mm balances weight and durability.

Dry Treatment

When nylon absorbs water it gets heavy and loses strength. Dry-treated ropes have a coating on the sheath, core, or both that repels moisture. If you climb in rain, snow, or ice conditions, dry treatment matters. For gym and fair-weather sport climbing, it is less critical but still extends rope lifespan.

Hand Feel and Handling

How a rope feeds through your belay device matters as much as the specs on paper. Sheath construction determines whether a rope feels supple or stiff in hand. A 48-strand sheath (like the Maxim Glider) runs smoother through devices. A 32-strand sheath can feel slightly more textured but is often lighter. Ropes break in over the first few uses. If a rope feels stiff out of the bag, give it a few sessions before judging.

UIAA Fall Rating

Every dynamic rope is tested to hold a set number of UIAA falls before failure. Higher fall ratings indicate greater durability under repeated hard falls. Most quality single ropes are rated for 6 to 12 UIAA falls. This does not mean the rope will fail after that number of real-world falls, but it is a useful indicator of overall toughness.

Brands We Carry

We stock climbing rope from Maxim, Sterling, Teufelberger, Petzl, and Marlow. These manufacturers test and certify every rope to UIAA and EN 892 standards.

Climbing Rope FAQ

Common questions from climbers

What type of rope do I need for rock climbing? +
Dynamic ropes are required for any climbing where falls are possible. Dynamic ropes stretch under load, which absorbs fall energy and reduces impact force on the climber and gear. Static ropes do not stretch and should only be used for rappelling, hauling, and fixed lines. Never lead climb on a static rope.
What diameter climbing rope should I get? +
For gym climbing and top-roping, 9.5mm to 10.5mm is standard. For sport climbing, 9.0mm to 9.8mm balances weight and durability. For trad, 9.5mm to 10.2mm handles the abrasion of gear placements. Thinner ropes (sub-9mm) are lighter but wear faster and are typically used by experienced climbers on specific projects.
What is the difference between single, half, and twin ropes? +
Single ropes are the most common type, used alone for sport, trad, gym, and top-rope climbing. Half ropes are used in pairs, each clipped through separate protection points to reduce rope drag on wandering routes. Twin ropes are also used in pairs but both strands clip through the same protection. Half and twin ropes are most common in alpine, ice, and mixed climbing.
How long should my climbing rope be? +
60 meters (200 feet) is the standard for outdoor sport and trad climbing. 70 meters is increasingly common for longer sport routes. For gym climbing, 35 to 40 meters is usually sufficient depending on wall height. Always check the route length before climbing to make sure your rope reaches the ground from the anchor.
What does dry treatment do? +
Dry treatment is a water-repellent coating applied to the sheath, core, or both. When nylon absorbs water it gets heavy and loses strength. Dry-treated ropes resist water absorption, which matters for ice climbing, alpine routes, and any climbing in wet or snowy conditions. Dry treatment also reduces dirt absorption and can extend rope lifespan.
What is the UIAA fall rating? +
The UIAA fall rating measures how many standardized test falls a rope can hold before failure. The test simulates a worst-case scenario with a factor 1.77 fall on a fixed anchor. Most quality single ropes are rated for 6 to 12 UIAA falls. A higher number indicates greater durability. In real-world climbing, ropes experience much less force than the test, so a rope with a lower rating is still safe for normal use.
How much does a climbing rope cost? +
A 60-meter single rope typically ranges from $150 to $350 depending on diameter, dry treatment, and brand. Thinner, dry-treated ropes with advanced sheath technology cost more. Gym ropes and workhorse models are on the lower end. Half and twin ropes are priced per strand, so a full set of two costs more than a single rope.
When should I retire my climbing rope? +
Retire a rope immediately if you see core shots, flat spots, stiffness, or sheath damage. With regular use (weekly), most ropes last 1 to 3 years. With occasional use, up to 5 years. Even unused ropes should be retired after 10 years due to material aging. Always inspect your rope before and after every climb.

Rock Climbing Rope & Cord at ROPE.com

Every climbing rope we carry is UIAA certified and built by manufacturers who engineer rope for vertical environments. Whether you are sport climbing at the local crag, projecting trad routes, training at the gym, or setting up fixed lines for rappelling, the rope you choose determines how the system performs.

Our dynamic climbing ropes from Maxim and Sterling cover everything from workhorse 10mm gym ropes to lightweight 8.9mm send sticks for redpoint attempts. For static applications like rappelling, hauling, and rope access, we carry kernmantle static rope from Teufelberger and Sterling in 8mm to 12mm diameters.

Climbing Accessory Cord

Accessory cord is essential for building anchors, prusik backups, rap extensions, and general utility. We stock nylon and polyester cord from 3mm to 8mm in both cut lengths and full spools. Nylon cord stretches slightly under load, which makes it suitable for prusiks and dynamic applications. Polyester cord has minimal stretch and holds knots well for cordelettes and static anchors.

ROPE.com sells climbing rope by the foot and in pre-cut lengths. No minimums, no pre-packaged bundles. Pick the diameter, pick the length, and we cut it to order. Questions? Reach out and our team will help you find the right rope for the way you climb.
