Kernmantle Rope

Kernmantle rope is a type of rope construction that consists of two distinct layers: the kern (core) and the mantle (sheath). The kern provides the rope's strength and load-bearing capacity, while the mantle serves as a protective outer layer.

The combination of the strong and durable kern with the protective mantle creates a rope that offers the best of both worlds: strength and abrasion resistance. Kernmantle ropes are widely used in professional and recreational activities that involve climbing, caving, mountaineering, canyoneering, rope rescue, and industrial applications.

Kernmantle ropes are the most common construction for dynamic climbing ropes. They feature a tight 32carrier, 40carrier or 48carrier cover to protect the core from any ingress of dirt or particles that might harm the core. The sheath is designed to generate some grab and friction for rappelling and lowering operations. The core is comprised of straight bundles of fiber that are loosely twisted. These bundles help to keep the rope firm yet flexible.  The amount of twist in the core fibers in one of the main characteristics that dictate whether the rope is static or dynamic.

Kernmantle ropes are equally integral to both industries, each employing specialized versions to ensure safety and efficiency in their respective activities.

Rock Climbing: Dynamic kernmantle ropes with high elasticity for fall protection.

Arboriculture: Static or low-stretch kernmantle ropes for controlled movement and load management.
