Marine Hardware & Accessories FAQ

Shackles, thimbles, twine, and rope finishing

What is a rope thimble and when do I need one?+
A thimble is a grooved metal or nylon insert that sits inside a spliced eye. It holds the eye open and protects the rope from chafe and crushing where it connects to a shackle, ring, or chain. Use one anywhere a spliced eye takes load against hardware, like anchor rode and mooring pennants.
What is a shackle used for?+
A shackle is a metal link with a removable pin that connects rope or chain to anchors, hardware, and fittings. Anchor and bow shackles are common on anchor rode; use one rated for the load and match the pin size to your thimble and chain.
What is whipping twine for?+
Whipping twine binds the end of a rope so it cannot unlay or fray. A whipped end is cleaner and longer-lasting than a heat seal alone, especially on 3-strand and larger-diameter lines that see handling.
What is shock cord (bungee)?+
Shock cord is an elastic cord used to secure gear, tension sail ties and covers, hold fenders, and take up slack. It stretches and rebounds, so it keeps light loads snug without a fixed knot.
How do I finish a cut rope end?+
For synthetic rope you can heat-seal the end, whip it with twine for a durable finish, or add a splice with a thimble where it attaches to hardware. For a clean, load-rated eye, our team can custom-splice the line for you.
