Mooring & Tow

Nylon

Double braid & 3-strand
Diameter: 3/4″–3″
Material: Nylon
Stretch: Moderate–High

Heavy nylon in double braid and 3-strand. Stretch absorbs the shock of mooring a heavy hull or towing under load, and it splices cleanly to a thimble and chain.

Best for: Mooring pennants, tow lines

HMPE / Dyneema

High-modulus single braid
Diameter: 3/16″–1″
Material: HMPE
Stretch: Very low
Floats: Yes

Wire-rope strength at a fraction of the weight, and it floats. Runs cleanly over winches and capstans with no broken strands. Pair with a nylon snubber for shock-loaded tows.

Commercial Marine Rope FAQ

Rope for tugs, workboats, and commercial vessels

What rope is used on commercial and working vessels?+
It comes down to the job. Heavy nylon — 3-strand and double braid in large diameters — handles mooring and towing where you want stretch to absorb the load. HMPE (Dyneema) is used for winch lines and high-load tow work where strength and low weight matter. Poly-dacron combination rope floats and is popular for tow lines. Polyester adds low-stretch abrasion resistance for deck and running gear.
What is the best rope for a heavy mooring pennant?+
Large-diameter 3-strand twisted nylon is the workhorse. Its high stretch rides out wind and current on a heavy hull, and it splices easily to a thimble and chain. Double braid nylon handles more smoothly and is stronger for its diameter if you want a cleaner line.
Why use HMPE / Dyneema winch line instead of wire?+
Synthetic HMPE like Samson AmSteel-Blue carries wire-rope strength at a fraction of the weight, floats, and has no sharp broken strands, so it's safer and far easier to handle on a winch or capstan. It has very little stretch, so for shock-loaded tow work pair it with a nylon snubber to add give.
What diameter does a commercial vessel need?+
Commercial mooring and tow lines typically run 1 inch and up, into 2 and 3 inch for ship and barge work, sized to the vessel's displacement and the loads it sees. Winch lines are sized to the drum and the rated pull. If you send us the load and application, we can help you spec the diameter.
Can you splice to spec — eyes, thimbles, and bridles?+
Yes. We hand-splice eyes with galvanized thimbles, build bridles, and finish ends to your specification. Tell us the length, eye size, and end fittings and we cut and splice it to order.
Do you sell by the foot and in bulk?+
Yes. Everything is available by the foot and on full spools, cut to the length your operation needs. For fleet or repeat orders, reach out and we'll set you up.
